Step Solver is a maths practice app used by children. The short version: the grown-up signs in, the child does not, and the child's work never leaves their device.
What we receive when you sign in
Signing in uses Google. We never see your Google password. Google sends us three things from your account:
- your email address, and whether Google has verified it
- your name and profile picture, as you have set them on your Google account
- the account's Google identifier — an opaque string that tells one account from another
We ask Google for nothing beyond that. We do not request access to your Gmail, Drive, Contacts, Calendar, or anything else in your Google account, and we could not reach them with what we are given.
What we do with it
- Put your name and picture on the page, so you can see which account is signed in.
- Keep a signed cookie in your browser so you stay signed in for 30 days.
- Record that a sign-in happened, with the email address, in our server log. Those logs are held for 30 days and are used to see who is using the app and to investigate abuse.
We do not sell it, share it, or send it to any advertising or analytics service. There are no advertising or analytics scripts on this site.
What stays on your device and is never uploaded
The child's name, their coins, and which questions they have solved are stored by your own browser and never sent anywhere. We cannot see them. Clearing the browser's storage for this site deletes them permanently — there is no copy to restore, which is the price of not keeping a child's record on a server.
Feedback you deliberately send
The app has a feature that captures a picture of the screen so a child can circle what confused them. Nothing is sent unless that Send button is pressed. When it is, the picture, the marks drawn on it, the question it came from and the name typed into the app are uploaded to our private storage in Singapore, and are used only to fix the lesson.
Children
The app is designed to be used by children, but the account is the parent's. We do not knowingly let a child under 13 create an account, and Google's own terms already require an account holder to meet a minimum age. If a child has signed in with their own account, write to us and we will delete it.
Where it is kept, and for how long
We do not keep an account record. There is no customer table, no profile, and no row created when you first sign in — the first sign-in is handled by exactly the same code as the hundredth, and it stores nothing. Signing in leaves one line in our server log, and that log is deleted after 30 days.
The only thing we hold for longer is feedback you deliberately sent us, which stays until you ask us to delete it. Everything is in Google Cloud in asia-southeast1 (Singapore).
Cookies
One cookie, set only after you sign in. It holds a signed token identifying your account and nothing else. It is not readable by JavaScript, is only sent to this site, and expires after 30 days. Signing out deletes it. There are no advertising or tracking cookies.
Getting your data out, or deleting it
Write to puays7@gmail.com and we will send you a copy of everything we hold about you, or delete it, within 30 days. You can also disconnect Step Solver at any time from your Google account permissions page.
Changes
If this page changes in a way that affects what we collect or what we do with it, the date at the top changes and signed-in customers are told by email.
